The fan fueled sequel to the highly popular King’s Quest series has had a trouble history but it’s seeing the light of day thanks to Activision.  ”Thanks to Activision” is not a phrase you hear very often these days from the gaming community so who would have thought they’d allow the troubled production to proceed with a release? “The Silver Lining” Chapter 1: Episode 1 is due out July 10th FREE with the rest to follow (free as well.)  Though the story of The Silver Lining encompasses 9 chapters total, only two will end up being developed.  The bangin’ trailer is after the jump. We want to try and bring you some web games you may or may not have heard from the fun to the weird to the challenging – these are GNSU’s featured favorite flash games that we’ve played and cherished.

Starting our first week of the segment is the badass DADGAME.

If you haven’t heard of Sakupen’s two hilarious flash cartoons (Dad’s Home and Dad’s At Work) then you are missing out.  While viewing these before playing isn’t necessary to get into the game it will certainly provide you with a great deal of entertainment.  That said, let’s get into why Dadgame is one of our favorite flash games.

See how many shits Dad gives? None. Dad does not give any.

Our hero (Arien’s in particular… Arien loves dads for reasons probably best left unexplained) is badass family man “Dad”.  Dad has no hair.  Dad is clad in work clothes.  Dad is bald and bad and clad in work clothes and will not hesitate to blow your goddamn head off with a laserbeam.

You play as Dad in a series of challenging levels where you brawl and complete requirements on your way to the top to beat the life out of his annoying boss.  Dad’s got a serious repertoire of fighting moves you can employ through simple controls to dispatch anyone standing in his way from football players, to helicopters to machinery of all kinds.  Dad can also use some special abilities including the power to rock your goddamn socks off.

You wish that he was your dad.

The game has a very nice visual style consistent with the cartoon series and a sense of humor to match it.  In the very first portion of the game you get to smash your boss’s office as Dad – try and tell me that isn’t satisfying.  In our Friday Flash Favorites segments we try to provide you with some flash games that might make the weekend come a little quicker and what would be more satisfying than the aforementioned office ragefest?  Okay, well maybe there are a few things but when you see Dad go to town it will certainly rank up there.

Sakupen, the game’s creator, also whipped up a pretty bangin’ soundtrack you can pick up on his site.  Come to think of it you should also check out his other flash animations featuring some of his music as well, it’s certainly worth a look.The game also comes with a list of achievements you can unlock on Newgrounds.com – and with those a set of rewards and in game goodies.  Upon completing the game’s storymode you also get 4 unlockable challenge rooms as well.  These are must-haves for anyone who is into the whole achievement thing.

With a kickin’ soundtrack, fun visuals, great gameplay and a load of other content (as well as a humorous companion cartoon or two), Dadgame is a great time waster and that is why it’s a perfect opener for our new segment.  You can play this game and see the cartoons on Newgrounds.com and check out more of what Sakupen has to offer at www.sakupen.com

Dad shredding a guitar solo holy shit look at his cool hat holy shit a robot

The highly anticipated game is the next in line for the arcade fighter series.  I have fond memories of discovering and playing the hell out of the second game in the series whenever I’d get a chance to visit an arcade, which was unfortunately rare.  I was never one to learn the combos and intricacies of the break-neck speed game (I never really picked up on learning fighting games until Soul Calibur 2, to be honest) but let’s be real for a second, the game was still fun regardless of what you knew.  Where else could you see Megaman teaming up with Venom and Blackheart in a free for all battle against a Sentinel, Wolverine and Ryu?  I don’t know anything about tiers but that is a hilariously awesome matchup right there button mashing or not.

The only other place you might see it, in fact, is on deviantart but we’re going to let you discover that for yourselves.

The only thing we could hope for in the future is an even more expansive fighting series… like Mugen but official basically.  One can dream I suppose…

Looks like a brave man has pioneered an 8 Bit game allowing you to experience the journey that is The Human Centipede.

The Human Centipede is a horror flick from 2009 that caused a bit of a stir due to the graphic premise.  I don’t want to ruin any of the fun for you and I think Arien would kill me if I did, but if you are among the uninitiated please click the above link to wikipedia or watch the trailer  below.

Not for the faint of heart…

3D Dot Game Heroes is From Software’s journey into Zelda the old school of gaming with a 3D twist.  A kick ass tribute to Zelda and other kickass adventure games of old, this PS3 exclusive might not excel in originality for the most part, but if you are playing this you are here for the nostalgia, not innovation.  The game comes fit with very familiar game mechanics.  Everything from the dungeons, quests, interface, inventory, music and controller layout will seem recognizable.  However, for most of us it’s been a long time and these are all welcome things.  The game never feels dull for a minute and it’s certainly not tiring going through dungeons on your quest to obtain the six orbs.

The visuals and music are a nice touch too.  Maybe I’m a sucker for stylized games but I really dig the “pixelated” look in 3D.  The music itself is another tribute going along with the theme of the game (the overworld seeming a bit too much like Zelda) but I don’t think I’d have it any other way.  It’s more than suitable for what you are playing.

Any complaints about the game are typically minor, usually directed at the lack of originality, however the game more than makes up for it, not only by being fun and nostalgic, but by adding other offerings to enhance the experience.  For instance, you can play as a goddamn robot if you want.  The game features a pretty kickass character creation system allowing you to make and animate whatever the hell you want.  Personally I went with Travis Touchdown of No More Heroes fame as well as everyone’s favorite Pokemon, Missingno seen below:

The game even comes prepackaged with a ton of hilarious player models ranging from the hero on the cover to Santa Claus to the fairly obscure Metal Wolf Chaos President.

The internet is full of other fantastic player made creations ranging from Final Fantasy characters to dongs of all shapes and sizes.  We at GNSU however, will leave you discover those on your own.

Aside from the badass editor is a fairly awesome sense of humor.  The game is very self aware and doesn’t take itself seriously for a second.  It takes every opportunity to make fun of itself, its inspiration and games of all kinds.  There a ton of hidden little references from the very obvious Zelda jokes to jabs at another From Software game, “Demon’s Souls”.

Even with the entertaining dialogue and hilarious possibility for your own hero, don’t take the game too lightly.  The dungeons get progressively more challenging and even the side quests can be a bit of a pain.

I personally suggested he try using the web game QWOP for training but he said that all that did was infuriate him.  And that it didn’t even help.  What a jerk!

In any event if you were on the fence about this one, let me mention that it’s got a pretty fairly priced $36 on Amazon – so in a world of most new games dropping at $60 what the hell are you waiting for?  The game is a ton of fun, a great throwback to games of old and there’s very little to complain about here.
