According to Joystiq Fox will be airing a 30 minute machinima film using the game alone to produce all visuals. An interesting move from both Fox and Rockstar.
The whole things seems kind of strange, honestly – but I guess no gimmick is beyond FOX. I’m not opposed to machinima or anything. The long running “Gordon Freeman’s Mind” series is an absolutely hilarious series that deserves a lot more attention than it gets. It’s just out of left field since machinima on TV is nonexistent outside of awful gamestop commercials about trading in used games.
Curiously one has to wonder where this falls in Ebert’s tirades on games as art. The merging of media and mainstream appeal of games these days has often led to horrible abominations of games to movies, movies to games, and now possibly games literally as movies. Arien previously mentioned the Heavy Rain movie in the works. The idea of translating a game that was meant to be an emotional movie like experience into a straight up movie is kind of sketchy. It’s only a matter of time before the likes of Uwe Boll turns the 8-bit Human Centipede game into a movie bringing this horrible media frankenstein full circle creating the first movie based on a game base on a movie.
Where does it end?
