Do you like running AND gunning?!

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

Well then you may just enjoy APB. APB is best described as a GTA 4 clone, but also so much more than that. In this open world 3rd person action game, you can be a criminal, defacing property, running down civilians or even mugging them with firm punches to the face for their hard earned cash. From what I’ve played so far it seems you can do everything a criminal can in this game even if you don’t want to do missions you can still steal cars and deliver them to chop shops for cash.

Cops or Enforcers as they’re called in these games have options themselves, recover stolen vehicles, witness crimes like muggings taking place before your eyes or do other various missions. Seeing as the word enforcer replaced cop you’re more of a vigilante so you have a license to kill in your pocket. Of course, you can also opt out for tazer guns and beanbag shotguns in the hopes of arresting a criminal which puts them out of the game for 20 seconds longer and allows you to smack talk them at the same time.

Playing this game straight out isn’t the only thing you can do though, this game features quite the detailed clothing, gun, car, music, logo editor. Creating a decal is quite simple, taking shapes and laying them out in sequence or twisting them into other shapes for lots of different pictures. You can then take said decal and plaster it over anything you like, use it as spray paint for tagging walls, put it on your clothes, or even your car. Just take a look at what I and others did…

Square Enix’s E3 2010 Lineup

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

squareenixe3Today Square Enix announced their E3 lineup including the highly anticipated MMO Final Fantasy 14 and The 3rd Birthday, a continuation of the Parasite Eve saga.  Among other titles mentioned in the press release were Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep and re:coded, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Dungeon Siege 3, and more.  Personally we are pretty excited by all of these titles, some of us more than others (someone here is particularly excited by the announcement of TWO Bearsworth Manor titles… TWO!)  Further titles include Kane & Lynch 2, as well as Final Fantasy 4: The Heroes of Light.

While Kingdom Hearts re:coded was announced there is still a title due for release in 2011 that is unannounced.  No mention was made if anything on this title would be revealed but we can only assume that it might be KH3.

It’s raining men. Supermen.

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

DC Universe Online is due out in November according to recent statements by Sony.

Apparently the gaming world can’t get enough of super heroes.

2004 saw the release of Cryptic Studios’s “City of Heroes” – an interesting twist on the MMO world that let us play as super heroes.  With an absolutely fantastic character creation engine you could create virtually any kind of hero you wanted with a myriad of powers to choose from.  The series continued on long after that with the additional expansions including “City of Villains” as well.

Then came Champions Online, also from Cryptic, which was yet another super hero driven game with a twist on the game play, but ultimately another CoH-like game.  (I will give it bonus points for its visuals, I’m a sucker anything with a sort of cel shaded look to it).

It doesn’t stop there, however, because Sony announced that DC Universe Online will make its way into the world in November.  While players won’t be able to control any of the famous DC characters they will possibly be able to interact with the on missions.  The idea is that like the aforementioned games you will be able to create your own character.  While I am not a big comics guy, the idea of playing as “The Tromboner” alongside Batman is pretty damn entertaining.

What is being done to set this game apart from the other super hero ventures?  Sony hopes to create a different MMO gameplay experience citing The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction as a source of inspiration.  The Hulk title was also an inspiration for Radical’s “Prototype” which had some exciting gameplay mechanics for a mediocre title.  If SOE can take the gameplay mechanics from these games and make it exciting this might be a unique MMO despite the overly saturated superhero (and MMO) environment.  At the very least, the comic industry’s foray into the video game world is far more entertaining to me than the movie world – but judging by enthusiasts reaction to the upcoming Avengers movie I am probably way off base with this.

In the end the comic book audience is fairly large (no pun intended) and is a pretty big market for a title like this, especially considering the amount of super hero clones running around in games like CoH and CO.  It’s questionable whether or not DCO will be able to hold its own however.  Wannabe super heroes will get a bigger look at this title come E3.

Until then, I leave you with this quote from The Bat:

“MY PARENTS ARE DEEEEEEEAD”

James, signing off.
